Tensions are rising in Osun State as Governor Ademola Adeleke and the All Progressives Congress (APC) trade accusations regarding potential election interference ahead of the August 15 vote. The disagreement stems from separate claims issued Monday by the Imole Campaign Council (TICC) and the Osun APC Governorship Campaign Council.
The TICC, representing Governor Adeleke, accused the police of harassment and bias. Bamidele Salam and Pelumi Olajengbesi of the TICC alleged that at least six supporters were killed due to political violence and that authorities have unfairly detained over 60 Accord Party members. They specifically pointed to a video purportedly showing a police officer giving a weapon to a political thug in Ilesa and urged Inspector-General Tunji Disu to ensure neutrality. Furthermore, the TICC claimed the APC is pressuring the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conclude voting by noon in areas favorable to Adeleke to suppress turnout.
The APC has strongly denied these claims, characterizing the TICC’s allegations as a distraction. Engr. Oluremi Omowaiye, speaking for the APC, alleged that the opposition is orchestrating a blackmail campaign against the police. He asserted that the TICC recruited vulnerable women to stage a provocative protest at the State Police Command in Osogbo, with some participants reportedly instructed to appear partially unclothed. The APC maintained that police actions are legitimate investigations into electoral violence and called on their supporters to remain peaceful while urging security agencies to maintain professional standards.
