A collective of Nigerian student groups and civil society organizations is petitioning the United States, the United Kingdom, and the international community to pressure the Nigerian Federal Government into guaranteeing a fair and credible governorship election in Osun State on August 15, 2026.
Represented by Olayinka Dada and Igwe Ude-Umanta, the coalition delivered formal petitions to the U.S. Embassy, the British High Commission, the European Union, and the United Nations in Abuja. The group cited significant alarm regarding reports of political intimidation, potential misuse of state institutions, and rising electoral violence.
The organization highlighted the recent freezing of Osun State Government bank accounts by the EFCC—a move eventually reversed by President Bola Tinubu—as a clear instance of political interference. The coalition criticized this action as a tactic of intimidation and urged security forces to remain impartial rather than targeting political opponents. They insisted that all investigations into election-related violence must be conducted without bias, regardless of the political ties of those involved.
Ultimately, the group requested that global powers monitor the electoral process closely and consider imposing sanctions on individuals who compromise the integrity of the vote. They emphasized the necessity of a level playing field for all candidates participating in the upcoming race.
