The Yobe State House of Assembly is requesting immediate support from the federal government, private donors, and aid organizations to assist residents impacted by severe flooding in Damaturu and neighboring areas. This appeal followed a motion introduced by Hon. Buba Ibrahim Kalallawa, who represents the Damaturu II Constituency.
Hon. Kalallawa reported that flooding has devastated Dikumari, Malum Matari, Maduri, Malari, and Pompomari. The disaster resulted in two fatalities and extensive property damage, leaving numerous families displaced and without their primary sources of income. While the lawmaker appreciated the rapid assistance provided by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, he stressed the need for additional help.
During the session, the House Leader, Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, urged contractors working on Damaturu’s drainage expansion to accelerate their efforts to mitigate future risks. Speaker Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio offered his condolences to the grieving families and prayed for those lost in the tragedy.
In separate business, the Assembly passed the report from the Standing Committee on Basic and Secondary Education regarding the proposed Yobe State Senior Secondary Education Fund. The bill was adopted following a review of the committee’s suggestions.
