Welsh Fire captain Phil Salt has suggested that The Hundred would benefit from being extended by one week, citing the physical toll of a congested calendar. His team recently navigated a demanding stretch of three matches in only five days, playing in Birmingham, Cardiff, and Manchester consecutively. Salt noted that this rapid turnaround, involving extensive bus travel, is particularly difficult for taller players like Marco Jansen and Lockie Ferguson.
Currently, the tournament crams eight group-stage fixtures into just 23 days. This condensed format is notably shorter than international equivalents like the Indian Premier League or the Big Bash League, which allow more breathing room between matches. The Professional Cricketers Association has previously voiced concerns regarding the high frequency of games, warning that such an intense schedule increases the risk of physical exhaustion and mental fatigue for athletes.
While Salt admits he does not have an immediate solution for the complex English cricketing calendar, he believes finding an extra week would significantly improve player well-being. Welsh Fire will continue their campaign this Sunday against Sunrisers Leeds before closing out their group stage at home against London Spirit next Wednesday.
