Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who leads the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for authorizing a pay hike for Nigerian military personnel. Representing Abia North, Kalu stated that the move shows the government’s dedication to supporting those who protect Nigeria’s borders.
The former Abia State governor noted that prioritizing military welfare is essential, given the significant risks troops face while fighting terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping. President Tinubu’s recent directive introduces salary increases ranging from 30 to 80 percent, set to begin on September 1. This policy affects approximately 250,000 members of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, adding roughly N264 billion to the annual federal payroll.
Kalu emphasized that investing in security forces is both a moral duty and a vital strategic step for the country. He urged military and security personnel to honor this support by acting with professionalism, fairness, and deep respect for human rights while performing their duties. The Senator believes that better compensation will elevate morale and improve operational efficiency across the services. He concluded that national security serves as the bedrock for economic growth and unity, and he remains committed to supporting efforts that boost the readiness of Nigeria’s security agencies.
