Jigawa State Police have taken eight people into custody regarding the violent clashes at Gujungu Market in Taura Local Government Area, an event that resulted in two deaths and one injury. SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the command’s spokesperson, stated on Wednesday that the arrests were the result of intelligence operations targeting the perpetrators.
The trouble started on July 26 after a conflict broke out between a soldier named Nura Bashir and a 25-year-old man, Biniya Alhaji Ibrahim. During the fight, the soldier reportedly stabbed Ibrahim, who subsequently died from his wounds. This sparked a wave of unrest where agitators assaulted a police station, used bows and arrows against officers, and burned down two shops.
Authorities arrested Muhammed Muhammed and Faridu Mohammed for their participation in that riot. Furthermore, on August 2, police captured six more men—Isiyaku Abdulkarim, Yahaya Habu, Ibrahim Abubakar, Audu Mamman Janare, Ya’u Duga, and Mamman Musa—for assaulting two vigilantes with weapons. One vigilante succumbed to his injuries, while the other remains under medical care.
Police also recovered six cows left behind during the chaos. The Commissioner of Police is working with community leaders, including Miyetti Allah representatives and religious figures, to stabilize the area and determine the underlying causes of the conflict. Residents are encouraged to remain peaceful and assist law enforcement with any relevant information.
