The family of Nnamdi Kanu has formally accused the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) of conducting a campaign of intimidation against the independent physicians treating the IPOB leader. Prince Emmanuel Kanu, representing the family, released a statement highlighting that this harassment persists despite ongoing legal proceedings at the Court of Appeal.
According to the family, Kanu’s health suffered significantly while in DSS custody, citing dangerously low potassium levels and untreated cardiac issues. They credit Emeritus Professor Dr. Martin Aghaji with stabilizing his condition. However, the family asserts that the DSS is now punishing these doctors for their intervention, including filing complaints of unethical behavior with the MDCN against Professor Aghaji.
The family also expressed alarm over the recent arrest of Dr. Aghaji and the summoning of another team member, Dr. Charles Ndukwu, before an MDCN investigative panel. They view these actions as an attempt to suppress evidence regarding the medical mismanagement Kanu allegedly experienced in custody. The family is calling for an immediate end to these pressures, the withdrawal of legal summons, and for the Nigerian Correctional Service to take responsibility for Kanu’s medical care in line with international human rights standards.
Formal notifications regarding these allegations have been sent to authorities in the United Kingdom, United States, and Israel, as well as various human rights groups. The Kanu family maintains that the targeting of medical professionals threatens both the integrity of the healthcare sector and the rule of law.
