Authorities have confirmed the recovery of a body during the search for a 13-year-old boy who disappeared while swimming off the coast of East Yorkshire. Emergency responders arrived at the scene in Hornsea around 18:00 BST on Tuesday following reports that the teenager was struggling in the water.
The search operation involved multiple agencies, including HM Coastguard, the RNLI, Hornsea Inshore Rescue, as well as local ambulance, fire, and police services. Despite a thorough overnight search, the teenager was not located until approximately 04:30 on Wednesday, when a body was retrieved.
Chief Superintendent Phil Booker described the situation as heartbreaking, noting that the boy’s family has been notified and is currently receiving support from officers. While formal identification is pending, officials have requested that the family’s privacy be prioritized during this time. Chief Supt. Booker also expressed his gratitude toward the emergency teams and the public for their assistance throughout the operation.
