Minister of State for Defence Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle has lauded President Bola Tinubu for sanctioning a pay hike for Nigerian military personnel. In a Tuesday statement, Matawalle labeled the move a significant step in bolstering the welfare and operational capacity of troops dedicated to protecting the nation.
Matawalle noted that he personally advocated for this salary adjustment since the current administration took office. Approximately 250,000 service members will see their pay increase beginning September 1, 2026. Under the new structure, ranks from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive an 80% raise, while Warrant Officers up to Colonels get a 50% boost. Senior officers, ranging from Brigadier-General to General, are set for a 30% increase.
The minister explained that this initiative is vital to supporting those fighting terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry. He conveyed the President’s belief that soldiers who ensure national safety deserve government support. Beyond salary improvements, the administration aims to modernize the military with better equipment and technology. Matawalle encouraged troops to view the raise as an acknowledgment of their hard work and a commitment to continued national service.
