A heartbreaking fire broke out at an Islamiya school in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, tragically claiming the lives of 17 Almajiri students.

The fire started late on Tuesday night, February 4, 2025, and continued for around three hours. In addition to the fatalities, 16 other students were left injured.

According to local resident Abdulrasaq Bello Kaura, the cause of the fire was traced to stored sticks, locally known as “kara.”

“It happened at Makaranta Mallam Ghali, inside their study hall. There are about 100 of them in the house, after they evacuated the students, they thought none of them remained inside the house, it was when they returned after the fire, they started seeing their legs, hands, they got burnt beyond recognition,” a source said.

Abdulrasaq Bello Kaura further mentioned that the deceased students were buried on Wednesday.

Comrade Mannir Muazu Haidara, the Chairman of Kaura-Namoda Local Government, confirmed the tragic incident and stated that he was en route to the scene. He promised to provide more details later.
