An assault by suspected armed herdsmen in the Abaushwa community of Guma Local Government Area, Benue State, has resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left several others wounded. The attack began around 11:30 p.m. on Monday near the LGA headquarters in Gbajimba, catching local residents off guard.
Reports indicate that the gunmen opened fire indiscriminately, claiming the lives of a father and his two children. Maurice Orwough, the Chairman of the Guma Local Government Council, denounced the violence as a heartbreaking and intolerable tragedy. Through a statement released by his aide, Ernest Tortiv, Orwough extended his condolences to the grieving families and expressed his hopes for the swift recovery of those hospitalized.
To stabilize the region and protect remaining citizens, authorities have dispatched security forces to the area. The council chairman urged the public to maintain order and cooperate with law enforcement by sharing any intelligence that could curb further violence. As of now, the Benue State Police Command has not issued a formal report, with spokesperson DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu stating that he would provide details once they become available.
