Outgoing leftist Colombian President Gustavo Petro claims to possess proof of electoral manipulation, cautioning that the upcoming administration of president-elect Abelardo de la Espriella could ignite a civil war. De la Espriella, 48, is scheduled to be inaugurated this Friday in Cali, breaking the traditional custom of holding the ceremony at the Congress in Bogota.
During a Monday press briefing, Petro labeled the election a product of widespread systemic fraud orchestrated by international entities and algorithmic manipulation, which he claims negatively impacted his ally, Ivan Cepeda. Petro has frequently criticized US President Donald Trump for his involvement in local politics and his endorsement of De la Espriella. Petro alleged that the incoming administration plans to extradite him to the United States on fabricated charges, an action he believes will trigger significant public unrest.
The leftist congressional faction, headed by Cepeda, intends to boycott the swearing-in event and has organized national protests. This atmosphere has raised concerns about a potential return to the violent demonstrations that occurred during the term of former President Ivan Duque. Entering office with no prior political background, De la Espriella has pledged to slash government spending by 40 percent, encourage private investment, and adopt a confrontational approach toward drug cartels and guerrillas, effectively ending the peace negotiations initiated by the Petro administration.
