A Kano High Court judge, Justice Aisha Mahmoud, sentenced 37-year-old Tahir Tanimu to death by hanging on Monday. Tanimu was found guilty of killing Shamsu Yakubu.
Tanimu faced three charges including criminal conspiracy, abetment, and culpable homicide alongside co-defendant Martins Joseph. The court determined the prosecution successfully established guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Regarding Joseph, the judge noted he was 15 at the time of the crime and deferred his sentencing to the state governor.
The incident occurred on March 1, 2019, in Unguwa Uku Quarters. According to Prosecutor Lamido Abba-Sorondinki, a man named Aminu Malan instigated Tanimu, Joseph, and seven others who remain at large to assault the victim. A political dispute escalated, resulting in the victim being stabbed in the chest with a knife. Although the defense sought leniency, the court proceeded with the conviction under Sections 97, 85, and 221 of the Penal Code.
