China Executes Man for Killing 35 People in Deadly Car Crash
On Monday, January 20, Chinese authorities executed a 62-year-old man, Fan Weiqiu, who drove his car into a group of people exercising outside a stadium, resulting in 35 deaths and over 40 injuries.
Fan, reportedly enraged by the division of property following his divorce, carried out the attack a day before a major air show by the Chinese military in Zhuhai City.
He rammed his small off-road vehicle across the grounds of the Zhuhai Sports Center, mowing down dozens of people who were exercising around the track.
When police attempted to apprehend him, they found Fan in his car, attempting to harm himself with a knife. He was subsequently taken to the hospital before being arrested.
Fan Weiqiu was executed less than a month after being sentenced to death by a court.
The Zhuhai Intermediate People’s Court conducted a public trial where Fan was convicted of endangering public safety through dangerous means, as reported by the state-run Xinhua news agency. The court described his motive as “extremely vile” and his actions as “particularly cruel.”
The attack, which resulted in 35 fatalities and over 40 injuries, has been identified as the deadliest in China in over a decade, according to authorities.
