Family of Major General Aguiyi-Ironsi Honors His Legacy of National Unity

The family of Major General Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi commemorated his 60th memorial, highlighting his legacy of national unity and urging leaders to prioritize the country’s collective progress.

The relatives of Nigeria’s inaugural Head of State, Major General Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, recently described the late leader as a dedicated patriot who spent his career fostering the country’s stability and cohesion. This statement was shared during a wreath-laying event held at the Aguiyi-Ironsi Cenotaph in Umuahia on Wednesday to commemorate the 60th anniversary of his passing.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Louisa Aguiyi-Ironsi emphasized that the gathering was intended to promote national reconciliation and peaceful living rather than stirring up past grievances. She noted that the nation’s progress depends on core values such as integrity, accountability, and the shared welfare of all people. She remarked that the event was an opportunity to celebrate a life sacrificed for the benefit of Nigeria while encouraging leaders to favor unity over sectional disputes.

The ceremony featured key figures including Minister of Defence General Christopher Musa, who attended on behalf of President Bola Tinubu. Governor Alex Otti and former First Lady Patience Jonathan were also in attendance to pay their respects.
