Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, has rejected accusations from former President Olusegun Obasanjo that he once bribed the late Ghali Umar Na’Abba to secure an impeachment. Through his aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku characterized the claims as a calculated attempt to damage his reputation and favor Obasanjo’s chosen successor for the 2027 election.
Atiku emphasized that Obasanjo is reviving old, unverified stories now that the primary witness, Na’Abba, has passed away. He argued that if there were genuine proof of criminal wrongdoing, the administration should have pursued legal action at the time. Furthermore, the former vice president suggested that Obasanjo’s hostility is a lingering result of Atiku’s historical opposition to the former leader’s controversial third-term bid.
Refusing to dwell on past political grievances, Atiku stated that he remains committed to addressing Nigeria’s urgent crises, including economic instability and insecurity. He challenged the former President to be transparent about his political alliances instead of employing deceptive tactics, asserting that citizens are far more interested in concrete solutions to current hardships than in stale political narratives.
