On Thursday, the Nigerian Senate officially approved the nomination of Lamido Yuguda Abubakar to lead the Board of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON). This decision came after lawmakers reviewed and adopted the findings presented by the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, which is led by Senator Adetokunbo Abiru.
During the session, Senator Abiru formally requested that his colleagues confirm Yuguda for the position. The appointment process began when President Bola Tinubu sent a formal request to the Senate, which was read aloud by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on July 8. President Tinubu stated that the nomination aligns with Section 10(1)(a) of the AMCON Act of 2019, as amended, noting that the leadership change was required following the departure of the previous chairman. Following the initial request, the Senate instructed the committee to evaluate the nominee and report their findings within a two-week timeframe.
