Upcoming 48-hour power blackout scheduled for northeastern Nigeria

TCN has announced a weekend-long power outage across several northeastern Nigerian states to facilitate essential infrastructure upgrades on the regional transmission grid.

Significant portions of Northeast Nigeria face a scheduled two-day electricity disruption starting next weekend. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced a maintenance operation that will impact consumers in Bauchi, Gombe, Damaturu, Maiduguri, Yola, Jalingo, and nearby areas.

The suspension of supply is set to commence on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. and will conclude on Sunday, July 26, at 5:00 p.m. TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah clarified that this downtime is required to install Optic Fibre and Ground Wire (OPGW) equipment on the 330kV Jos–Bauchi–Gombe transmission line at the Bauchi substation.

During this period, the Yola Electricity Distribution Company and the Jos Electricity Distribution Company will be unable to distribute bulk power. The project aims to bolster national grid reliability and enhance system monitoring capabilities. While the 32-hour total outage will disrupt homes, hospitals, and businesses, TCN emphasized that power restoration will occur as soon as the work is finalized. The company expressed regret for the inconvenience and requested patience from the affected public.
