Venezuelan Earthquake Casualties Surpass 5,000

Venezuelan authorities report over 5,000 deaths following the June 24 twin earthquakes, as the country taps into IMF funds for urgent reconstruction and aid.

Following the pair of massive earthquakes that devastated Venezuela on June 24, government officials reported that the death toll has officially climbed above 5,000. National Assembly leader Jorge Rodriguez confirmed a total of 5,069 fatalities, primarily concentrated in the coastal state of La Guaira, which was hit by 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude tremors.

While the number of injured citizens stands at 16,740, most have received medical clearance. Interim President Delcy Rodriguez announced that the nation has accessed $346 million from the International Monetary Fund to assist with rebuilding efforts. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva verified that the funds were sourced from Venezuela’s own reserve tranche to address immediate humanitarian requirements.

Approximately 20,000 residents remain homeless, residing in congested camps that struggle with inadequate sanitation and water access. Venezuela possesses roughly $5.1 billion in Special Drawing Rights at the IMF, assets that were previously inaccessible due to disputes over presidential recognition. These financial channels reopened earlier this year following significant political shifts in the country.
