The Liberal Democrats have formally requested that the English FA and Uefa sever ties with Fifa, claiming the international football federation is undermining the sport. Party leader Sir Ed Davey argued that Fifa has lost its way, asserting it no longer prioritizes supporters and should be dissolved entirely.
This push follows Fifa’s controversial move to reverse a match ban for an American player after pressure from US President Donald Trump. Tensions have mounted over other issues, including expensive ticket pricing and the exclusion of Somali referee Omar Artan from the US. Uefa previously slammed the lifting of the player’s ban as an unjustifiable crossing of a red line.
While the English FA remains a member, a withdrawal would bar England from participating in future World Cups. Sir Ed emphasized the need for a transparent, fan-focused governing body, urging European organizations to lead a collective exit. Despite growing criticism regarding his leadership, power consolidation, and commercial focus, Fifa President Gianni Infantino is expected to secure a fourth term through 2031 with the backing of many national associations.
Liberal Democrat spokesperson Anna Sabine characterized Fifa as a closed-shop cartel, criticizing the willingness of member associations to accept ongoing scandals rather than pushing for genuine reform. While some advocates for reform like the Football Action Network suggest everything should be considered if the body refuses to change, the path toward a new governance structure remains uncertain.
