Hon. Justice Maurice Ahemba Ikpambese, the Chief Judge of Benue State, has issued a stern warning to magistrates regarding the dangers of corruption. He emphasized that any breach of judicial independence severely damages the public’s trust in the legal system.
During a meeting at the High Court of Justice in Makurdi, Justice Ikpambese stated that judicial roles are held in high public trust. He reminded the officials that their true legacy depends on their adherence to their judicial oaths rather than the length of their service. According to a statement from David Jooli, the court’s protocol officer, the Chief Judge defined corruption broadly to include not just financial bribes, but also favoritism, the manipulation of records, and improper interactions with legal counsel or litigants.
Justice Ikpambese advised against maintaining overly familiar relationships with those involved in court cases. He also addressed the importance of handling garnishee proceedings with extreme care, noting that these matters demand strict legal adherence. Furthermore, he highlighted that excessive adjournments hinder the delivery of justice and urged the magistrates to pursue ongoing legal education.
Regina Alashi, the Benue State chairperson of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria, expressed appreciation for the guidance and committed the body of magistrates to maintaining professional integrity and efficiency in their duties.
