The Coalition of Civil Societies for Good Governance and the Northern Youth Association of Nigeria have officially opposed calls for Works Minister David Nweze Umahi to resign. These demands surfaced following the death of 26-year-old nurse Mary Habila at the minister’s private home in Uburu, Ebonyi State, on June 27, 2026.
During a press briefing in Abuja, Northern Youth Association of Nigeria President Godiya T. Adams Bogoro advocated for a transparent and impartial inquiry into the incident. The groups extended their sympathies to the Habila family, emphasizing that their stance is intended to uphold the rule of law rather than dismiss the tragedy.
Bogoro criticized the Northern Youth Council of Nigeria for demanding the minister’s resignation prior to the completion of official investigations. He argued that such pressure amounts to trial by media, which contradicts the constitutional principle of being presumed innocent until proven guilty. The coalition warned that forcing a minister to resign based on social media allegations sets a harmful precedent.
The organizations urged the public and political entities to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric that could disrupt legal proceedings. They called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to conduct an unbiased investigation based solely on evidence. Ultimately, the coalition reaffirmed its commitment to due process and requested that law enforcement be allowed to carry out their duties without external interference.
