Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has praised the Sierra Leonean government’s choice to drop treason charges against its former leader, Dr. Ernest Koroma. Jonathan, acting in his capacity as head of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation and the West African Elders Forum, stated that this move allows the former president to return home.
In an official statement released in Abuja, Jonathan described the decision as a significant act of statesmanship that prioritizes national unity and long-term stability. He emphasized that this resolution serves as a triumph for diplomacy and reconciliation over conflict. Furthermore, he commended President Julius Bio and all stakeholders involved, including ECOWAS leadership and various mediators, for their patience and commitment to a peaceful outcome.
Jonathan highlighted the success as proof that West African institutions are capable of resolving regional issues through homegrown solutions. He also expressed his gratitude toward Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu for their support and hospitality toward Koroma during his medical stay in Nigeria.
Dr. Ernest Koroma had been facing treason charges related to a failed coup in 2023. Following a notice from the Attorney General’s office, these proceedings were officially discontinued, clearing the path for his repatriation from Nigeria where he had been seeking medical care since January 2024.
