The Senate has officially passed the Federal Road Safety Corps (Amendment) Bill of 2026, which institutes harsher punishments for various traffic violations. This legislative change, now awaiting the President’s signature, targets improved road safety and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations across Nigeria.
A notable aspect of the bill is a proposed N50,000 fine for individuals caught selling goods or preaching within commercial vehicles. Legislators explained that this measure aims to reduce driver distractions and protect the well-being of passengers.
The legislation also targets impaired driving by significantly raising the fine for motorists under the influence of alcohol or drugs from N5,000 to N100,000, potentially paired with a two-year prison sentence. Furthermore, those who refuse to participate in roadside breathalyzer tests upon reasonable suspicion by FRSC officers face a penalty of N50,000, six months in prison, or a combination of both.
Other traffic infractions, such as disregarding traffic lights, road signs, and pavement markings, now carry a fine of N100,000. Additionally, speed limit violations and reckless driving may result in N100,000 fines, with reckless driving potentially including a two-year jail term. The amended bill covers a total of 52 specific traffic-related offenses.
