Lawal Ibrahim: EFCC Moves to Forfeit Plot 4022 for Colleen Mero Yesufu Despite Lack of Court Ownership Ruling

Lawal Ibrahim questions why the EFCC is seeking to forfeit a disputed Abuja property for the benefit of private complainants before any court has established legal ownership.

Since Colleen Mero Yesufu asserted a claim to Plot 4022 in Guzape, Abuja, in 2023, the situation has devolved into an intense dispute involving EFCC investigations and occupation of the property. Despite a Federal High Court order requiring all parties to maintain the status quo, Rebecca Omokamo Godwin-Isaac reports that she is still deprived of essential utilities, including electricity, water, and cooking gas.

Crucially, no court has issued a final judgment naming Colleen Mero Yesufu as the rightful owner of Plot 4022, nor has any ruling nullified Mrs. Godwin-Isaac’s interests. Nevertheless, the EFCC has requested that the Federal High Court forfeit the property specifically for the benefit of nominal complainants, including Yesufu. The agency’s formal motion in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/151/2026 explicitly lists the property as a target for forfeiture to compensate these private parties. This has sparked concerns that state power is being utilized to resolve a land title dispute in favor of a private claimant before legal ownership is established.

Mrs. Godwin-Isaac has faced dire living conditions, including spoiled food and a lack of sanitation, which she argues persists despite the court’s order for parties to return to the conditions that existed before the EFCC’s intervention. She asserts that the agency is effectively acting as a vehicle for private conveyancing rather than an impartial investigator. She maintains that the court must first examine documents, payments, and titles to determine the true owner. Until such a legal conclusion is reached, the EFCC should not use its authority to enforce a result that serves the interests of private complainants at the expense of her fundamental rights and human dignity.
