Man taken into custody for threatening Nigel Farage online

A man in his 20s was arrested in London after allegedly threatening to shoot Reform UK leader Nigel Farage in a post on X.

Authorities have apprehended a man regarding a social media message that threatened to shoot Reform UK leader Nigel Farage. Police were notified of the post on May 8, one day following the local and mayoral elections. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a man in his 20s was detained in south London this past Tuesday, facing accusations of sending intimidating communications to an elected official. He has since been released on bail while the investigation continues.

This development follows the recent death of Reform spokesperson Ann Widdecombe at her residence in Devon. The Parliamentary Liaison and Investigation Team notified Farage of the arrest on Wednesday. Reflecting on the situation, Farage remarked that this was the first instance where police had taken preemptive action against a social media post, expressing a desire for authorities to investigate the hundreds of similar threats he receives annually. Meanwhile, Reform UK home affairs spokesperson Zia Yusuf emphasized that Farage constantly faces severe personal danger and argued that those questioning his security requirements should refrain from doing so. The party has also proposed implementing constant, 24-hour protection for all Members of Parliament.
