Final Repatriation Flight Returns 308 Nigerians from South Africa

A final flight carrying 308 Nigerians from South Africa has landed in Lagos, marking the completion of the government’s emergency evacuation program for those affected by xenophobic violence.

On Wednesday, the Nigerian government finished its emergency evacuation mission for citizens impacted by xenophobic violence in South Africa. The last repatriation flight touched down at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos at 11:30 a.m. with 308 returnees and three coordinating government officials on board.

This final group brings the total number of Nigerians brought home through the government’s emergency program to over 1,500. Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu stated that this mission highlights President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to protecting Nigerians overseas. She noted that by extending the evacuation timeline past the deadline set by anti-migrant groups, the President proved his commitment to assisting citizens during times of crisis.

The Minister welcomed the returnees and expressed gratitude to the Nigerian High Commission and various agencies for their work in organizing the transit. She encouraged those returning to utilize government resources during their reintegration process. The mission was initiated after fresh outbreaks of xenophobia compelled many Nigerians in South Africa to request state assistance to return home.
