The Nigerian government has revitalized its Digital Switch Over (DSO) initiative, aiming to bring 100 free-to-air television channels to at least 40 million households throughout the country. Charles Ebuebu, the Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), announced the shift during a recent interview in Abuja.
The updated strategy moves away from the earlier terrestrial transmission model. Instead, it utilizes a satellite-based platform to ensure immediate nationwide availability. Ebuebu noted that while the previous model only reached eight states with limited channel options, the satellite system is already providing 73 channels and plans to reach 100 soon.
The NBC determined that terrestrial broadcasting faced significant infrastructure challenges, as it would have required the construction of 160 transmission towers. By utilizing the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) infrastructure, the government provides full coverage from the start. This approach not only broadens access to local content but also improves picture quality and supports national unity by making diverse programming available to all citizens.
