President Donald Trump has reversed his decision to implement a 20 percent fee on vessels moving through the Strait of Hormuz. Instead of pursuing the levy, which was meant to cover security costs, the President stated he will now pursue trade and investment agreements with Gulf nations. Trump noted that leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait successfully urged him to reconsider the charge during recent discussions.
The President explained that he finds the idea of charging tolls for the waterway unnecessary, preferring that these countries invest billions into the U.S. economy instead. Despite walking back the toll, Trump maintained that his administration will proceed with a strict blockade on ships connected to Iranian cargo. This decision comes as the Strait remains a volatile focal point for global oil and gas transport following the breakdown of a recent ceasefire between the U.S., Israel, and Iran.
