Northampton man receives life sentence for wife’s murder

Michael Thompson has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 33 years for the murder and rape of his estranged wife, Kimberley Thompson, after staging her death as a suicide.

A 56-year-old man, Michael Thompson, has been handed a life sentence for the rape and murder of his estranged wife, Kimberley Thompson. During his six-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court, it was revealed that Thompson, a resident of Northampton, killed his 43-year-old wife at their Pinewood Road home last August. He subsequently staged the scene to appear as a suicide, even placing bottles of alcohol and pills near her body to mislead investigators.

Judge Nirmal Shant KC mandated a minimum prison term of 33 years. She condemned Thompson for his refusal to appear in court for the sentencing, labeling his absence as an act of profound cowardice. The judge highlighted that the couple had been married for 19 years and were in the midst of divorce proceedings when the murder occurred. Evidence presented in court confirmed that Thompson had subjected his wife to a sustained campaign of domestic abuse, controlling behavior, and violence, while secretly recording her for hours.

Prosecutor Miranda Moore KC demonstrated how Thompson fabricated messages on social media to impersonate his wife, attempting to create a narrative that she had consumed excessive alcohol. Toxicology reports later confirmed no alcohol was present in her system. The couple’s daughter, Athena, delivered a powerful statement via video link, describing her father as a narcissist who could not bear her mother’s newfound independence and impending divorce settlement.
