Public concern is mounting regarding the unexplained death of Mary Habila, a physiotherapist assigned to Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Dave Umahi. Her passing at the minister’s residence has sparked widespread calls for clarity.
Francis Nweze, a senior aide to the minister, officially announced the tragedy on Saturday. He clarified that Habila and a colleague, Anita Baski, were staff members at the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences who had been seconded to the works ministry for three years. The minister reportedly urged the family to allow an autopsy to identify the cause of death, but the relatives declined this request.
Reports circulating on social media allege that Habila was discovered in a state of undress, intensifying the controversy. These claims have fueled intense debate on the platform X, where critics are questioning the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Journalist Fejiro Oliver has publicly challenged the minister, arguing that the involvement of university staff in private work requires explanation. Others, including activist Henry Shield, have demanded a formal investigation, alleging that the situation warrants serious legal scrutiny. Currently, the Nigeria Police Force has not issued an official statement regarding the matter.
