Jaminton Campaz faces threats following World Cup elimination, sparking safety concerns

Jaminton Campaz has gone into hiding after receiving death threats following his missed goal in the 2026 World Cup, drawing dark parallels to the 1994 murder of Andres Escobar.

Colombian forward Jaminton Campaz has reportedly gone into hiding following a wave of death threats directed at him after the national team was knocked out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This situation has ignited fears of repeating the tragic murder of Andres Escobar, who was killed after the 1994 tournament.

The controversy stems from a missed opportunity by the 26-year-old during the final stages of the round-of-16 match against Switzerland. Following a scoreless 120 minutes, Switzerland eliminated Colombia in a penalty shootout. The New York Post reports that Campaz did not return to Bogota with the rest of the squad, fueling rumors that he may have relocated to Argentina, where he plays professionally for Rosario Central.

Campaz addressed the harassment on Instagram, where he urged fans to abandon violence. He emphasized that representing his country was a lifelong goal and stated that he remained fully committed to the team despite the disappointing result. The Colombian Football Federation has formally condemned the intimidation, issuing a statement that calls upon the Attorney General’s Office to investigate and prosecute those issuing the threats.
