Modiu Oladele Olarinde, the Oba-elect of Oguntedo in Lagos State, has formally requested that Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani intervene in a persistent land dispute. Olarinde warns that the ongoing tension is a serious threat to the safety and stability of the area.
According to the monarch-elect, the unrest stems from the actions of two sons of the late Yekeni Olarinde. He claims the men are illicitly selling and leasing community property without authorization. Olarinde further alleges that these individuals use armed intimidation to force shopkeepers into recognizing these fraudulent deals.
This long-standing conflict has previously resulted in fatalities. Olarinde cited the tragic death of a 20-year-old man, a widow’s only child, who died from gunfire allegedly linked to these suspects. Those accused of the killing are currently being prosecuted. Olarinde emphasized that the same cycle of violence previously caused the death of the former ruler, Oba Babatunde Yekini Olarinde.
Furthermore, the Oba-elect described a disturbing incident from 2020. He alleges that after the late monarch’s funeral, a brother of the deceased seeking the throne returned with armed associates and the aforementioned sons to desecrate the king’s grave by burning his remains. Olarinde is now urging security forces to act immediately to maintain law and order.
