Oyo State Governor Explains Delay in Releasing Rescued Pupils and Teachers

Governor Seyi Makinde stated that rescued students and teachers from Oriire must undergo medical care and security checks before reuniting with their families.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State confirmed that schoolchildren and educators saved from the Oriire Local Government Area must stay under military supervision for now. This time is necessary for critical medical treatment and standard security screening.

Speaking to journalists on Saturday following a visit to the 2 Division Medical Centre at Odogbo Barracks in Ibadan, the Governor noted that the victims require careful observation before returning to their households. He expressed relief at their recovery, though he highlighted that several individuals remain weak and require urgent health support over the next two days.

A final health evaluation is set for Monday, after which the military will transition custody of the survivors to the state government. The group was abducted on May 15, 2026, when gunmen invaded schools in the Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota regions, seizing 39 pupils and six teachers. Tragically, the attackers killed one teacher during the initial raid, and a second victim passed away during their 56-day ordeal.
