Kwankwaso calls for immediate national census to end two decades of reliance on outdated data

NDC vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is urging the Federal Government to conduct a long-overdue national census, citing the negative impact of using 20-year-old population data on national planning.

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has pushed the Federal Government to initiate a new national Population and Housing Census. He highlighted that Nigeria has failed to conduct this essential exercise for twenty years.

Sharing his perspective on his official X account on July 11, 2026, in observance of World Population Day, Kwankwaso noted that the nation still depends on statistics from 2006. He argued that this dependency hampers progress in vital sectors like healthcare, education, security, and infrastructure.

Without modern data, equitable development and effective resource distribution remain out of reach. Kwankwaso emphasized that precise population statistics are fundamental for secure governance and long-term national growth. He concluded his statement by challenging the government to move past excuses and organize a transparent, technology-integrated census immediately.
