Dr. Basil Ogomegbulam, who leads the Human Rights Justice Advocates, has publicly disputed claims made by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, regarding the severity of economic hardship in Nigeria. Ogomegbulam argued that Onanuga’s government position prevents him from providing a neutral perspective on the struggles faced by everyday citizens. He specifically dismissed Onanuga’s reliance on infrastructure and loan programs as evidence of success, stating that these initiatives do not alleviate the immediate burden of high living costs.
Chief Johnson Okolo, former head of the Osakwe Industrial Cluster, joined the criticism by suggesting that government officials often fail to grasp the reality of the average person. He pointed out that true economic health should be measured by the purchasing power of families against the soaring prices of food and fuel. Okolo challenged the administration to consider whether current civil service wages can actually cover the basics of life.
Legal expert Chris Muo also weighed in, noting that while Onanuga is simply fulfilling his duties as a spokesman, his comments do not mask the reality of the crisis. Muo observed that many citizens are suffering significantly under current policies, even if they choose not to voice their frustrations openly.
