The Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie, recently surprised listeners with a guest spot on the long-running BBC Radio 4 serial, The Archers. A dedicated fan of the production, she recorded her lines during a secret visit to the BBC Mailbox studios in Birmingham this past May.
During Thursday evening’s episode, which coincides with the show’s 75th anniversary year, the Duchess appeared as herself. In the storyline, she attended the Borchester Show in her capacity as honorary president of the charity Linking Environment And Farming (LEAF). She worked alongside cast members including Tim Bentnick, David Troughton, and Susie Riddell.
The programme’s official site had teased the arrival of a surprise visitor who would leave an impression on the Ambridge characters. The Duchess is the latest royal to feature on the show, following previous cameos by Queen Camilla in 2011 and Princess Margaret in 1984.
Before the recording, Sophie spent time meeting the cast and crew. First broadcast in 1951, The Archers remains the longest-running continuous radio drama in history, boasting over 20,000 episodes that explore the lives of residents in the fictional village of Ambridge while addressing significant social and agricultural issues.
