Calabar Federal Court orders N100m payout by Police for fatal incident involving 22-year-old

A Federal High Court in Calabar has ordered the Nigeria Police and four other respondents to pay N100 million in damages for the death of 22-year-old Onyekachi Mba.

A Federal High Court in Calabar has ordered the Nigeria Police Force and four additional parties to pay N100 million in damages regarding the passing of 22-year-old Onyekachi Mba. The young man died following a confrontation with officers assigned to the Cross River State Government House.

Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu issued the ruling on Thursday regarding a lawsuit initiated on October 10, 2025, by legal representative Chief Roland Nbubuka. The court determined that the conduct of the officers infringed upon Mba’s constitutional rights to life, dignity, and personal liberty as defined in the 1999 Constitution.

During the proceedings, the court concluded that the severe injuries Mba suffered at the Government House on August 1, 2025, represented a clear violation of his human rights. The victim eventually passed away while receiving care at the Naval Reference Hospital in Calabar.

The judgment mandates that the N100 million compensation be paid by the respondents, which include the Nigeria Police Force, the Police Service Commission, the Cross River State Commissioner of Police, ASP Victor Edet, and SP Emmanuel Dickson, who serves as the Chief Security Officer for the Government House.
