Former Vice President and presidential contender Atiku Abubakar has issued a stern caution to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insisting that no harm should come to Peter Obi, who leads the Nigerian Democratic Congress. The message was delivered on Thursday through Atiku’s media aide, Phrank Shaibu.
This advisory follows public statements from Peter Obi regarding threats against his life as the 2027 election cycle approaches, a situation that has prompted widespread unease across the nation. Atiku emphasized that the government is constitutionally required to protect all opposition leaders, viewing their safety as a core indicator of the nation’s democratic health.
Atiku asserted that the harm of a single opposition figure impacts the entire political landscape. He urged the current administration to prioritize statesmanship over dismissive rhetoric when addressing concerns raised by political rivals. According to Atiku, a government that responds to criticism with insults displays insecurity rather than strength.
He further argued that the current administration should focus its efforts on combating national crises like hunger, poverty, corruption, and kidnapping. Atiku concluded that a government prioritizing the pursuit of its critics over resolving these pressing existential threats has misunderstood its fundamental purpose.
