Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has officially started the 2026 wet farming season by introducing a 50 percent subsidy on fertiliser and providing complimentary farming supplies to 120,000 small-scale producers. The rollout, held at the Kwaya Kusar Main Stadium, involves 200 truckloads of NPK fertiliser offered at half price, paired with the donation of seeds, water pumps, bicycles, and storage equipment.
This initiative aims to bolster regional food security, increase job opportunities, and improve overall economic conditions. Governor Zulum highlighted that the program supports the entire agricultural process, from planting to market access, with a focus on supporting women and young farmers. In addition to the farm inputs, the governor announced a ₦500 million cash relief fund for vulnerable groups, women, and youth across five local government areas: Biu, Hawul, Kwaya Kusar, Shani, and Bayo.
Addressing the crowd, the governor cautioned farmers against selling or mismanaging the subsidised supplies. The state Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Bawu Musami, noted that Borno is becoming a top agricultural hub in Nigeria due to consistent state-led investments. Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, also participated in the event, suggesting the return of the annual agricultural show to encourage innovation among local producers.
