Tensions Escalate Between Oshimili North Chairman and Councillors Over Impeachment Dispute

A power struggle in Delta State’s Oshimili North Local Government has intensified, resulting in the impeachment of the legislative leader and accusations of financial misconduct against the Council Chairman.

A severe conflict has erupted between the executive and legislative branches of the Oshimili North Local Government Council in Delta State. The dispute centers on Council Chairman Innocent Esewezie and members of the legislative arm, leading to the impeachment of the House leader and internal divisions among the councillors.

Reports indicate that the roof of the legislative building was removed on orders allegedly linked to the Chairman to block assembly meetings. Legislators who remain loyal to the impeached leader, Jeffrey Mordi, have resorted to holding proceedings under a tree on council grounds to maintain their operations. The tension began when the Chairman allegedly orchestrated the removal of Mordi from his leadership position. While some councillors reportedly accepted vehicles and financial incentives to support the executive branch, Mordi resisted, maintaining his status as the rightful leader.

As the situation worsened, intimidation tactics involving security personnel and thugs were reported. During this unrest, Mordi secured the Mace to prevent it from being stolen or damaged. This act further infuriated the Chairman, who interpreted the move as a defiance of his power. Furthermore, Mordi has submitted a formal petition to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), accusing the Chairman of executing the 2025 local government budget without the necessary legislative authorization. Attempts to reach both parties for comment have been unsuccessful.
