Suspected Insurgents Abduct Students at Borno Secondary School

Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram and ISWAP members attacked a school in Lassa, Borno State, kidnapping several students during NECO exams and resulting in casualties.

On Monday morning, individuals believed to be affiliated with Boko Haram and ISWAP launched an assault on Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, located within the Askira/Uba Local Government Area of Borno State. The assailants stormed the premises around 9 a.m. while students were actively sitting for National Examinations Council (NECO) papers, firing weapons indiscriminately to create widespread alarm before taking an indeterminate number of students into the nearby wilderness.

Initial reports indicate that one teacher was killed and another was wounded during the confrontation. Borno State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, verified the occurrence, noting that several students are currently listed as missing. While the police command has yet to finalize reports on total fatalities, they have initiated a joint search-and-rescue mission.

This operation involves military personnel, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, and the local Askira/Uba area commander. These security forces are currently scouring the surrounding forested regions in pursuit of the kidnappers to secure the safe return of the captured students.
