The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has initiated an inquiry into the failure of a three-storey commercial building situated in Alakija, Satellite Town. General Manager Florence Gbaye confirmed the investigation through a statement issued by the agency’s Public Affairs Director, Ademuyiwa Adu.
Authorities plan to conduct a thorough structural examination to identify the factors that led to the collapse. In light of the incident, Gbaye stressed the importance of community vigilance, urging citizens to report abandoned or unstable structures to the agency immediately. The agency aims to ensure public safety by strictly enforcing building codes across the state.
While expressing empathy for those impacted, the agency provided a toll-free number, 07000-527222, for reporting future hazards. Tensions remain regarding the property’s history, as some occupants claimed they were unaware of any prior demolition notices. Conversely, an anonymous official noted that the building was marked for demolition, yet occupants had remained on the site. Emergency operations have concluded with 27 rescues and nine confirmed fatalities.
