Sokoto High Court hands down death sentences for terrorism and arms smuggling

A Sokoto High Court has sentenced three men, including a foreign national, to death for their roles in terrorism and illegal arms trafficking.

A Sokoto State High Court has ordered that three men be executed by hanging following their conviction for terrorism and illegal weapons trafficking. The individuals, identified as Jabbi Alhaji Yalle from Niger, Yusuf Muhammad, and Kabiru Muhammad, were prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Presiding Judge Nuraddeen Muhammed Bello stated that the evidence presented against the trio was sufficient to secure a conviction. The court further ruled that all assets and cash seized from the men during the investigation must be forfeited to the Federal Government.

DSS Counter-Terrorism agents arrested the group on June 13, 2025, during an operation aimed at dismantling cross-border criminal syndicates. The investigation linked the men to the proliferation of illegal weapons and support for terrorist cells impacting Nigeria’s North-West.

Local observers have lauded the verdict, noting that the thorough investigation and legal resolution bolster faith in the judicial system. This ruling is seen as a strategic advancement in Nigeria’s broader objective of curbing organized crime and violent extremism through rigorous intelligence work and legal accountability.
