Medical unions in Akwa Ibom State have called off their week-long strike after the state government mediated a resolution. The industrial action was triggered by the alleged mistreatment of University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) staff, including Prof. Eyo Ekpe, by agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Concerned about the impact on patient care, Governor Umo Eno organized a meeting on May 15, 2026. Led by Deputy Governor Akon Eyakenyi, the assembly included members from the EFCC, security services, UUTH leadership, the Nigerian Medical Association, and various health unions.
The EFCC issued an apology for the conduct of its officers. The commission pledged that a formal apology from its national headquarters would follow and promised to prevent future incidents. Attendees agreed that medical facilities should be treated as protected spaces, urging security agencies to respect due process during operations.
The stakeholders also called for an investigation into the origin of a fraudulent medical report linked to the incident. To ensure future cooperation, a liaison committee representing the government, hospital management, the EFCC, and health unions will oversee these agreements. Following these deliberations, the unions voted to resume medical services.
