The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the successful rescue of Nigerian workers stranded in the Central African Republic (CAR), following widespread attention from a viral video showing them pleading for help.

The Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, announced in a statement released on Tuesday, July 29, that the workers have been located and are now in the custody of the Nigerian Embassy in Bangui. Their repatriation to Nigeria is currently being arranged.

The workers were reportedly held in the Bambari region, about 850 kilometers from Bangui, after their Chinese employer allegedly seized their passports. The video triggered public concern and prompted swift diplomatic intervention.

“The stranded Nigerian workers in CAR have been successfully rescued and are currently in the custody of the Embassy of Nigeria in Bangui,” Ebienfa stated. “A very big commendation to the staff of the Embassy and the Government of CAR for the successful operation.”

He added that the Ministry quickly made contact with the victims through embassy officials and engaged CAR authorities to ensure their safety. Their passports were retrieved, and a vehicle was dispatched to bring them from Bambari to the capital.

Ebienfa further noted that discussions are ongoing with a company in Bangui to provide the rescued workers with accommodation and welfare support ahead of their return to Nigeria.

He also advised Nigerians seeking employment abroad to thoroughly verify the legitimacy of their employers and ensure all travel documentation is in order. Additionally, he urged citizens to register with the Nigerian Embassy upon arrival in any foreign country to facilitate support in case of emergencies or consular issues.
