The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has appointed Dr. Timothy Samaila, a consultant neurosurgeon, as the new head of its Accident and Emergency Unit. This move comes in the wake of a viral video that sparked nationwide outrage over the alleged neglect of accident victims at the hospital.

The appointment was announced on Wednesday by the hospital’s Medical Director, Prof. Saad Ahmed, following the conclusion of an investigation into the June 6 incident.

The viral footage, widely shared on social media, showed accident victims lying unattended outside the hospital. Eyewitnesses alleged that medical staff refused to assist the victims, citing a lack of consumables and insisting it was not their duty to move patients into the facility.

In response to the public backlash, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, ordered a full investigation. Prof. Ahmed confirmed that the hospital promptly activated its complaint protocol by convening an independent investigative panel.

“The panel thoroughly examined the facts, and necessary measures have been taken based on its recommendations,” Ahmed stated in a release titled “Findings of the Investigative Panel on Staff Response to Accident Victims at the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja Following a Viral Video Seen on Social Media.”

He disclosed that the three victims in the video were ultimately treated and discharged in stable condition on the same day. Contrary to initial claims, the panel found no shortage of medical supplies at the time.

To ensure accountability, Ahmed said staff members implicated in the incident had been referred to the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee, in accordance with Nigeria’s Public Service Rules.

Dr. Samaila’s appointment, he added, signals a broader reform effort to improve emergency response systems, upgrade staff training, and integrate trauma care best practices.

The hospital also announced new collaborations with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and the Medical Association of Nigerians Across Great Britain to align its emergency services with global standards.

Ahmed urged the public to direct feedback through the hospital’s official complaints and monitoring platforms, which he said are clearly displayed at all service points.

“Using these platforms ensures prompt attention, enhances patient satisfaction, and helps avoid incidents that may escalate into harassment of healthcare workers.

“We acknowledge the concerns raised by the public and reaffirm our commitment to maintaining and improving the high-quality services FMC Abuja is known for,” he added.
