President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Russia is requesting 30,000 additional troops and new missile systems from North Korea to bolster its military efforts. According to a statement posted by the Ukrainian leader on social media, logistical preparations for these reinforcements have been active in the Russian Voronezh region since June.
Zelensky highlighted that this collaboration extends beyond the current conflict in Ukraine. By involving North Korean forces, Russia is providing them with practical combat training and technological improvements for their arsenal. The Ukrainian president warned that this partnership poses a significant security risk to nations across Asia.
North Korea has already supplied thousands of soldiers to support Russian operations in the Kursk region since 2024, alongside continuous weapon shipments since the invasion began in 2022. South Korean intelligence reports suggest that at least 2,000 North Korean personnel have lost their lives during the fighting.
The two nations solidified their military ties through a mutual defense treaty in 2024. During a recent visit to Moscow, North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui reiterated support for Russia’s objectives, while President Vladimir Putin expressed appreciation for the ongoing alliance. In exchange for military assistance, Pyongyang receives financial compensation, energy supplies, and advanced technology to bypass international sanctions.
