The Yobe State Police Command has successfully dismantled a criminal group involved in fraudulent bank transfers and the possession of counterfeit foreign money. SP Dungus Abdulkarim, the Command’s spokesperson, confirmed the arrests on Sunday. Acting on a complaint from a victim in Potiskum, officers apprehended five individuals on July 18, 2026, for obtaining 10 bags of fertilizer worth N488,000 via a falsified transaction alert.
The suspects include Mohammad Ibrahim, Abdullahi Aliyu, Muhammad Mukhtar, Mohammad Bashir, and Alhaji Ahmad Mohammad. During a subsequent search of their Damaturu hotel room, police discovered various items, including suspected fake US dollars and Somali Shillings, alongside ritual objects and charms. The investigation into the origin of these counterfeit funds continues.
In a separate set of reports, the command documented the detention of two men accused of sexually assaulting minors. On July 18, 2026, authorities in the Garin Alkali Division arrested 24-year-old Habu Haruna for the alleged rape of a seven-year-old girl. Shortly after, on July 19, 2026, detectives from the Bara Division took 65-year-old Mohammed Yau into custody for the alleged abuse of an eight-year-old girl.
Commissioner of Police Usman Kanfani Jibrin denounced these violent acts, labeling them inhumane. He has ordered a swift investigation to ensure that those responsible for these crimes face the full extent of the law.
