The 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai highlights China’s shift toward system-level AI integration, flexible governance standards, and open international cooperation, presenting a distinct alternative to Western development models.

The 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, held in Shanghai, showcased a significant expansion in scale, featuring over 1,100 enterprises and 100,000 square meters of exhibition space. The event highlighted China’s unique trajectory in the AI sector, which diverges from the Silicon Valley model.

In terms of hardware, the focus has transitioned from individual chip performance to massive system integration. Displays like the Huawei Atlas 950 and the Shuguang 8000 super cluster demonstrate a shift toward large-scale, real-world deployment. This strategy emphasizes practical implementation alongside technological advancement, creating a distinct approach to building AI ecosystems.

Governance strategies also vary significantly. While the U.S. prioritizes maintaining technological leadership and the EU focuses on risk-based regulation, China is promoting a system centered on safety, controllability, and dynamic standardization.
